Why were there so pitifully few black volunteers cleaning up Louisianna and Mississippi after Katrina?

My church volunteered twice to clean up and rebuild after Katrina.I met and saw hundreds of volunteers. Only 2 volunteers were black. The homes we were rebuilding was in black neighborhoods. Some were appreciative, others didn’t say anything. What struck me was the 3 nice old black women whose homes we rebuilt who had sons there who didn’t lift a finger to help rebuild their own mothers’s homes. They just layed around and drank beer.

if what u are saying is true then that would really suck. I dont know the statistic of what race volunteer but it just make one more reason why blacks are frown upon.

Well first of all you have to keep in mind that blacks only make up 13% of the population (in america) and you should be more compassionate as to what a lot of colored people go through(and have gone through), especially hence you’re in church. Continue to be kind and helpful and believe your blessings will come back tremendously, but if you are focused on peoples skin color, and whoever else is contributing (or not), they won’t be worth much. Furtermore, be color blind, and you’ll not only be richer mind, body and soul, but you’ll open many more doors and worthwhile oppurtunities in life. Everyone gets what they have coming … i.e. you reap what you sow ;-) Peace!

because your relatives should have left my relatives in Africa…
then we wouldn’t be in hurricanes.

It isn’t fair that we gotta do this thing… to please you.

Nobody told you to go to the black neighborhoods.

maybe so, but lets not forget about many white people that were busy taking FEMA and redcross for everything they could, even though their property wasnt damaged. Unfortunately, I personally knew many of these people.

and fyi to another answer, do your history and find that in many cases it was in fact black people trading/selling other black people out of africa.

I’m a teacher, working with Black students, and all I have to say is your stupidity is astounding. My students would fully agree.

Well, these 2 boys sounded like lazy bums. That’s all I can say. Not sure, I see a lot of Black people helping Black people here in NYC.

okay. how do you know how many black people came through to clean up that disaster? you are taking once instance and concluding that very few black people came through to help out. you clearly have an issue with black people to begin with by trying paint the select individuals that happen to be black with a negative brush. please. this is retarded. this was an american disaster, why are you attempting to keep tally of the races that you have observed. ugh. you seem so judgemental. those people have been through hell. there have been plenty of black volunteers to help throughout the years. it’s idiotic to conclude that "few black people have helped" does your "church" teach you to be so judgemental?
