What do people think about this letter to the editor over illegals?Term "illegal" doesn’t paint a true picture?

Term ‘illegal’ doesn’t paint a true picture
http://www.theadvertiser.com/article/20090621/OPINION03/906210353
I would like to respectfully suggest that you reconsider how you are reporting on undocumented immigrants. Your article "Illegals often set free" suggests a bias that has no place in reputable journalism. The article is inflammatory and does not address the broader problems with our immigration system, which include lack of safe, legal channels through which to migrate.
It also does not acknowledge that the majority of undocumented immigrants are law-abiding, taxpaying individuals who contribute millions of dollars to our economy each year. As a native of Acadiana who has spent the last six years working with undocumented immigrants victimized by forced prostitution and labor, I can attest that the Department of Homeland Security has bigger fish to fry.

The people I work with cannot simply walk into a consulate and apply for a visa. They have no money, no power or influence in society – they are among the most marginalized in our global economy and often fall prey to human traffickers because they have no other means to support themselves and their families. I do not dispute that people who break laws should be sanctioned; however, we need to remember our basic humanity rather than draw artificial lines and distinctions that desensitize us to the suffering and the needs of other human beings. I ask you and your readers to consider what border you would not cross to feed, clothe and educate your children.

Illegal is illegal. Calling them by some other name obfuscates rather than clarifies the issue. Ms. Moore’s humanitarian concerns are heartfelt, well-stated and come from one who puts her time and energy where her mouth is. I respect people like her, but feel that their energy should go into helping the problems illegals face in some way other than circumventing our laws.

Where can I buy a deep fried Turkey for Thanksgiving in San Antonio, TX?

Posted by admin on October 21st, 2009 and filed under acadiana | 6 Comments »

I purchased a D.F.T. about 2 years ago at Grady’s for Thanksgiving but it was absolutely horrible. This past weekend I did a search for BBQ restaurants in San Antonio and contacted about 10 places. They all said they’re not doing D.F.T.’s for Thanksgiving.

Does anyone know of any restaurants/stores that will be selling these for Thanksgiving? My boss informed me of Acadiana Cafe (which I am going to contact) but just in case, I’d like to have a backup.

Thanks in advance!

So when Piyush Jindal loses re-election in 2011, will all his admirers still say he’s presidential material?

Posted by admin on October 21st, 2009 and filed under acadiana | 4 Comments »

Jindal was able to win last time because he was the only candidate with good statewide recogition. The anti-Jindal forces were divided by geography. Georges in New Orleans, Campbell in North Louisiana, and Boasso in Acadiana.

Had Breaux run, it would have been a slaughter for Jindal. Had anyone of statewide stature run, Jindal would have been down for the count. His vote total only a few points over 2003.

The chances are Mitch Landrieu will run for and win the governor’s mansion in 2011. So when this happens, my question is, will people still be fawning over him as a presidential candidate, or will a bunch of outside money flood into a Louisiana election to try and buy it so they can protect their dream
Blanco had good approval ratings before the storm too, and Jindal is not popular here.

As people keep talking about this nonsense of him running for president, his ratings will go down. One thing we don’t tolerate is those who won’t put the state first, and I don’t think he can.

And as for the comments about the Landrieu’s, you know, if Mary Landrieu was so bad, you could come up with some good competition. Terrell?, one of the rudest women in the state. Kennedy, who wasn’t even a Republican anyway but you got him to switch parties because no real Republican wanted to challenge her. And you couldn’t even beat her when she had to share a ticket with Barack Obama

Mitch Landrieu is one of this state’s best leaders and he will make a fine governor. Will be the first time we’ve had a New Orleans governor in a long time
What’s racist about stating his legal name. Honestly. No one would say I was being racist if I started saying Mitchell instead of Mitch

And if you look at many of the parishs Jindal wins, more people voted against him, but he had the plurality. Funny how that works.

And the Republicans are hypocrites on this because on the one hand, you sent money and operatives into New Orleans to make sure that Ray Nagin could win re-election, just so you could use Nagin winning to run against New Orleans in elections in other parts of the state
And Blanco wasn’t the best governor, but it’s not like she was meant to be anything other than a placeholder. Jindal would be nothing without Mike Foster. He would be nothing without him. Why Foster took a shine to him, I don’t know, can’t complain about him, Foster did help Mary.

We’ll just see how his popularity starts stacking up once the national press corps starts flooding into Baton Rouge. We in this state don’t like national scrutiny, doesn’t jive with how this state works.

And Georges would have governed circles around our lucky governor, absolute circles.

Probably.

Jindal is the GOP’s "minority" answer to offset Obama.
In their minds, Jindal is their ‘black’ candidate!

The Palin project failed to work so their touting Jindal.

Pathetic isn’t it?
