Questions about Louisana Territory/Lewis and Clark Expedition?

Posted by admin on March 28th, 2010 and filed under louisana | 1 Comment »

What did Lewis and Clark see, including geography, climate, native American tribal culture, etc.
Thanks so much, ten points.

Their route took them up the Missouri River where they visited Daniel Boone’s family. (Daniel had died already.) As they rowed further up they encountered a great cloud like fog in front of them but it was just little white feathers an enormous flock of geese had shaken out. You can’t see that today because the goose population has been decimated.
They were attacked by a grizzly bear, the most ferocious animal they had ever seen but eventually shot is dead.
Another thing different today is that you can’t go all the way up that river by boat because of all the dams the Army Corps of Engineers has built.
They spent the winter in North Dakota with the Mandan Indians who ate dogs as part of their diet. L & C said dog was delicious. I believe their was a lot of sexual activity between the Indian women and the expedition men, but I might be wrong. The Indians were very curious about Clark’s slave, the only black on the trip and the first one they had ever seen.
At the rapids and cataracts on the Columbia River called the Dallas they got really fed up with the Indians there because of their congenital thieving of the whites.
Climate-wise the winter in North Dakota was bitterly cold and the humid winter on the west coast caused them to have a constant battle with mold and mildew.

Hope this helps.

The USS Lafayette/SS Normandie Fire 1942

Posted by admin on March 27th, 2010 and filed under la fayette | 22 Comments »

From the historic “Stillman Fires” film collection:

The SS Normandie was once the pride of the French Merchant Marine and was the largest, most luxurious oceanliner afloat when she came into service in 1935.

In September, 1939 the war in Europe had just begun and Nazi-German troops were invading France swiftly. The Normandie was safely in the neutral waters of New York Harbor when war broke out. The US Government allowed the ship to remain in the harbor… a refugee which most certainly would have been immediately used for Nazi naval military purposes if she were to return.

Shortly after war was declared between Germany and the US on December 11th, 1941 the US War Department and US Navy seized the french liner at her berth and immediately began to convert her from passenger liner to high-capacity troop transport. She was renamed USS Lafayette and painted battleship grey with camoflage shadowing.

Threats of Nazi sabotage loomed across the eastern seaboard, but work continued with vigilance. However on the afternoon of February 9th, 1942 those rumored threats seemed to have possibly become true when a mysterious fire broke out aboard the Normandie/Lafayette.

The fire spread quickly through the upper decks, forcing shipyard workers to evacuate the ship. New York city fireboats pumped thousands of gallons of water from the Hudson River into the ship to help battle the blaze, but the extreme weight of the trapped water within her decks caused her to list dangerously to port. By that evening, the monsterous ship laid on her side, resting on the riverbed completely capsized.

She remained for several years in this condition while naval workers slowly cut away her superstructure and pumped out water from her hull to slowly right her. By the time she was refloated, the war in Europe was drawing to a close and the ship was no longer needed for war duty. The Navy kept her as surplus until 1947 when she was finally sold for scrap.

Although Nazi sabotage was immediately named as the probable blame, the investigation redirected the blame to a combination of careless workers with an acetyline torch, flamable materials stored in poor locations adjacent to the worker’s location, poor or non-functioning fire-fighting protection such as waterpumps, fire sprinklers or alarms.

It is rumored that the fire may have been intentionally set by the Mafia. “Lucky” Luciano’s mob had control of New York’s docks and labor unions. The destruction of the Normandie forced the government to realize how vulnerable the docks were to possible Nazi sabotage and led the US Navy and the FBI to negotiate a deal with Luciano (while he was in Prison) for his mob to manage security of the docks until the end of the war. In exchange, Luciano and other leaders were given the opportunity to live a free life outside the US in Cuba, South America or even back in free Italy where many American Mafia leaders swept into towns and cities to establish local governments. This agreement led to the Italian-American Mafia networks to grow internationally and become more powerful and more bloody than ever before during the 1960’s and 1970’s.

“Operation Exodus” Sheriff Arms Civilian Police Force to Fight Islamic Terrorism in Lousiana

Posted by admin on March 27th, 2010 and filed under lousiana | 7 Comments »

A Louisiana sheriff has begun training 200 local volunteers in basic hand-to-hand combats techniques as part of Project Exodus aimed at protecting the northwestern corner of the state from the danger of terrorists, the Shreveport Times reports.Reporter Drew Pierson writes that Bossier Parish Sheriff Larry Deen’s policing plan involves “a mostly white group of ex-police volunteers and a .50-caliber machine gun” and was inspired in part from the Book of Exodus in the Bible.Watch above the official video of the first day of training, provided by TPMTV, or click here.”The buck stops with Larry Deen,” the sheriff says, according to the Times. “The liability stops with Larry Deen. I am the chief law enforcement officer in this parish, and it is incumbent upon me protect all of the people in it.”Deen rejects any notion that he is setting up a militia. “We run from that word,” he says. “We’re just the opposite that word.”Doyle Dempsey, chief deputy for support services, says in the training video that if the project is successful “we will be ahead of the curve when it comes to fighting Islamic extremists.”The volunteers will be armed provided weapons such as shotguns, riot shields and batons, the newspaper says, including a .50-caliber machine gun mounted on what the sheriff’s office calls “the war wagon.”Five of the 200 volunteers are black, the Times says. Women will only be used in a “support role,” Deen says, indicating non-combat activity. The teams of “highly trained volunteers” would also be used to protect local food, water, oil, gas and medical supplies in the event of a disaster, like Hurricane Katrina, in which state and federal resources are limited. “We want to make sure that never happens here,” he says.An excerpt:As evidenced by recent terror threats, it is apparent that homegrown terrorists are in our midst. With the easy accessibility of the Internet, it is quite possible that these local and international terrorists can form a national or multiple location attack on our nation at any given moment. And no matter whether we are a direct target or not, fear and panic will still permeate our community. Control will have to be regained to ensure the safety of our residents. That is where Operation Exodus comes into play. It utilizes preventive measures to safeguard Bossier Parish from the fear and outcry that will inevitably transpire.Update at 1:26 p.m. ET: TPM Muckraker’s Zachary Roth reports sheriff’s office spokesman Ed Baswell told him that there have been intelligence reports showing that there have been “cells” and people operating within the parish “that have been trained as terrorists or went overseas to be trained as terrorist.”"It tells us that these are the kinds of thing we can’t assume are happening far, far away,” Basell said. “Terrorists can tend to strike anywhere and everywhere.”"There’s not a state of paranoia, or anything like that,” he added.
